As a sign of appreciation for her cultural contributions¬†Bj√∂rk’s¬†homeland of Iceland have given the eccentric pop icon an entire island.

According to sources, Bj√∂rk originally enquired about buying the island of Elli√∞aey back in 2012, but instead of asking her to pay for it the government decided to offer it to her free of charge. At 0.45 square km in area, Elli√∞aey is the third largest island in Iceland and is believed to have been formed during an eruption about five or six thousand years ago. The only access to the island is via a rope on its lower east side and by boat (or helicopter) from the mainland, making it quite the artist’s sanctuary. There are just a few cattle who live there, as well as thousands of birds that use it as a safe nesting site.
