The Olympics dominated last night’s British Design Awards, with top gong going to Hopkins Architects for the Velodrome, with the BarberOsgerby designed Olympic Torch taking second place.
The awards run by Elle Decoration, supported by retailer John Lewis, were determined by a public ballot who selected from 30 shortlisted projects.
Six winners were announced, among them – last year’s British Designer of the Year – Lee Broom.

Olympic velodrome by Hopkins Architects // There are so many things we like about this building: its cedarwood exterior (whose curved shape has led to it being dubbed ‘the Pringle’, in homage to the crisp); the fact that, unlike certain other Olympic venues, it has been completed on budget; and that it has been given the thumbs up by the people who will actually use it — cyclists. It also has a legacy that relates to its original purpose: after the games, it will become a community cycling centre. All of which makes it our architectural Olympic champion. hopkins.co.uk

2012 Olympic torch by Barber Osgerby // Having taken a good look at the Olympic torches from the past decade, we can confidently say that Barber Osgerby’s gold design is a class apart from its predecessors. And we are proud to say that ELLE Decoration played a teeny part in its success. Back in 2008, Jay Osgerby and Edward Barber designed our very first trophy for the British Design Awards (3), which was a distinctive three-sided cylinder — a shape that subsequently evolved into this streamlined creation. barberosgerby.com
‘Crystal Bulb’ light by Lee Broom // Lee Broom has scooped a place on our British Design Awards shortlist for the third year running. This time, it’s for his knockout ‘Crystal Bulb’ light, which combines the industrial with the decorative. Cut with a classic crystal pattern, it transforms the everyday bulb into something worth celebrating. Lit by a replaceable LED, its eco-credentials are impressive, too. leebroom.com
