Liam Benson has won the $20,000 Hazelhurst Art Award 2011 Works on Paper Prize for his photographic self-portrait  A Christian Country. The award, judged by artist Ben Quilty, winner of the 2011 Archibald Prize, the digital photographic print features the artist clad in body paint depicting the Australian flag, and wearing a tiara bearing the words ‘A Christian Country.’The work explores themes of national as well as gender identity.

Liam Benson is a performance artist who documents his work through photography, video and new media. Benson’s work deconstructs the social perceptions of gender, race, culture, sexuality and identity by cross-referencing art, popular culture and media language. Benson also regularly works in collaboration with Naomi Oliver as the performance-based duo, The Motel Sisters. Liam is currently working towards his next solo exhibition at Artereal Gallery in 2012.
